Barber, John “Captain John” A.
John “Captain John” A. Barber, 71, of Luna Pier, MI, died Thursday, August 9, 2018. Born December 9, 1946, in Toledo, OH, he was the son of Willis J. and Doris A. (Schlender) Barber. A 1964 graduate of Bowsher High School, he then received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Toledo. John embraced his military career, serving in US Army during the Vietnam War. He served with the 101st Airborne Division (Currahee) and was a forward observer who was the youngest artillery captain at the time. John received several military medals, including the Purple Heart. He retired from Conrail Railroad after multiple years of service. An avid runner, John competed in the Blade Classic Marathon and the Sylvania Triathlon for several years. He served on the Luna Pier Zoning Board. John enjoyed working on his ’76 Corvette, golfing, fishing and boating on Lake Erie, and would never turn down a game of Euchre. Most of all, John enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and attending their sporting events. He was an avid reader. John was also an author who had his book, “First Mole”, published. He had a generous heart, always putting other’s first. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
John is survived by his loving son, Jim (Melissa) Barber, Fiancé, Marsha Palmer; grandchildren, Hayden and Cameron and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings.
